DataONE and CILogon: Spring 2011

posted Mar 26, 2011, 11:21 AM by Jim Basney
The Spring 2011 newsletter of the DataONE (Data Observation Network for Earth) project describes significant progress toward use of federated identity with CILogon. DataONE is developing "a distributed framework and sustainable cyberinfrastructure that meets the needs of science and society for open, persistent, robust, and secure access to well-described and easily discovered Earth observational data." DataONE requirements for authentication via web browsers as well as thick-client applications and authentication of services and agents that represent systems and people, identified at a September 2010 workshop, motivate the use of certificates from CILogon. CILogon project members are working closely with DataONE project members on an integrated approach to federated authentication that provides an authentication experience that is as seamless as possible, while leveraging campus identities through the InCommon federation.
